Globally, hundreds of thousands of patients per year remain on a transplant waiting list, hoping to receive an organ transplant that will either improve or save their lives. Sadly, far too many patients die while waiting for an organ transplant. When balancing the number of patients on transplant waiting lists with the number of available organs for transplant, it is critical that healthcare providers across the continuum of care leverage the diagnostic and management tools available to them to optimize the success rate for transplantation procedures.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the history and types of organ transplantations performed.
  • Be aware of global and U.S. statistics for organ transplantations, including the number of people waiting for and receiving organ transplants and statistics regarding survival after an organ transplant.
  • Understand the critical laboratory testing required pre- and post-surgery to help manage transplant patients and optimize patient and graft survival.
  • Learn the most up-to-date guidelines/recommendations for immunosuppressant drug therapy and monitoring to help preserve graft function post-transplantation.
